Sometimes you struggle so hard with one concept (life) that you never realize you can just let go, and I think this was about letting go. i think this song is about blunt acceptance of degradation. But I think there's also a connection between faith and meaning - that a belief in a higher power usually leads to purpose. The suicide/hell/punishment connection is widely believed (even though it's not biblical nor espoused by modern theologians).
